As part of the 2024-25 Walker Cultural Leader Series, the Department of Music is featuring the work of composer, performer, and music educator, John Robert Matz.

Matz will share his experience composing for Tchia (Awaceb, 2023), an action-adventure game inspired by the developers' familial and cultural ties to New Caledonia. This collaboration with Indigenous Peoples in New Caledonia provides models of ethical cross-cultural collaborations and how modern western composers can respectfully highlight art forms and feature artists from and inspired by Indigenous culture. Tchia is also an example of how a small "indie" studio can prioritize music and sound, even on a small budget.
