BOY

New Zealand, 2010. Directed by Taika Waititi. 87 min. NR.
Starring: James Rolleston, Te Aho Eketone- Whitu, Taika Waititi

Boy, an 11-year-old child and devout Michael Jackson fan who lives on the east coast of New Zealand in 1984, gets a chance to know his absentee criminal father, who has returned to find a bag of money he buried years ago.

“It's a disarmingly lovely, big-hearted film, and hilarious in places.” Cath Clarke, Guardian

Boy is a charmer, a funny and affecting coming-of-age story rendered with heart, and with nuttiness.” Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

This screening is part of the: Dibaajimo/Tells a Story Film Series
A curated film series presented in partnership with Brock University Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies / Department of Sociology.

During the Winter 2025 term, Assistant Professor Lyn Trudeau (Sagamok Anishinawbek First Nation, Eagle Clan) is teaching a new course at Brock University - Indigenous Film. She has also curated a selection of titles covered in the course into a screening series for our community to experience on the big screen.

"This film's distinctiveness draws on humour, relationships, interpreting world and “through all pain and heartache, there is still room to laugh” says director Taika Waititi. I believe this film highlights family and how a young boy navigates coming to terms with old and new realities." - Dr. Lyn Trudeau
