A Film House presentation
SGAAWAAY K'UUNA / EDGE OF THE KNIFE
Canada, 2018. Directed by Gwaai Edenshaw & Helen Haig-Brown. 101 min. NR.
Starring: Willy Russ, Adeana Young, Brandon Kallio
A tragic accident causes an anguished man to retreat deep into the forest where he is transformed into a "wild man."
“A vision so distinct and unfamiliar to audiences that the film feels abundantly fresh.” Barry Hertz, The Globe and Mail
“A film stacked with stunning imagery, where the natural and mythical get tangled.” Radheyan Simonpillai, NOW Toronto
This screening is part of the: Dibaajimo/Tells a Story Film Series
A curated film series presented in partnership with Brock University Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies / Department of Sociology.
During the Winter 2025 term, Assistant Professor Lyn Trudeau (Sagamok Anishinawbek First Nation, Eagle Clan) is teaching a new course at Brock University - Indigenous Film. She has also curated a selection of titles covered in the course into a screening series for our community to experience on the big screen.
"Though set in the 19th century this film is relatively new and is in the Haida language (which is on the brink of disappearing). I feel this aspect is significant to raise – preserving, hearing, and experiencing our languages through film. It is based on an old Haida story brought to life and exemplifies a revitalization of culture through this storytelling medium." - Dr. Lyn Trudeau
