The Psychology of Serial Killers
TUE 29 OCT AT 7:30PM

PARTRIDGE HALL

The Psychology of Serial Killers features a touring masterclass, diving deep into the darkest and most thought provoking of subjects. Recommended for ages 13 and up.

Who are these notorious killers? How does an ordinary neighbour become a mass murderer?

During this 90 minute thrilling experience, Dr. Rachel Toles, true crime’s preeminent Psychologist, seeks to help us understand these burning questions:
• What makes a serial killer?
• Why do they commit such horrific crimes?
• What drives them to murder?
• Do they share common traits that trigger mass-killings?
• What motivates them to kill over and over again?
• How do they chose their victims? Is it random or something more sinister?
• Why do some women fall in love with these convicted killers?
• And perhaps the most important question of all… why are we so fascinated by serial killers and true crime?

Dr. Rachel Toles, a renowned Clinical Psychologist and criminal expert, explores the terrifying minds of the world's most infamous serial killers in her show. Through her personal research, she uncovers surprising motivations behind these heinous crimes and delves into why we, as human beings, are so captivated by such horrors.

Winnipeg native, and renowned Clinical Psychologist and criminal expert, Dr. Rachel Toles, reprises her role as the expert of The Psychology of Serial Killers show following its 40+ city US tour this spring.

Dr. Toles' fascination with true crime began at a young age when she witnessed the violent death of a teenage girl. This experience ignited her curiosity about death and murder, leading her to write illustrated stories on the subject as a child. She aims to bring deeper insight to the topic of true crime through her social media channels. By connecting with online communities, she works to debunk myths and answer questions surrounding serial killers and criminal psychology. Her goal is to raise public awareness and promote safety in the face of society's most disturbing individuals.

With extensive experience in both clinical and forensic evaluation settings, Dr. Toles has dedicated herself to understanding the motivations, behaviors, and patterns of dangerous criminals, particularly serial killers. Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Toles has served as an expert witness in high-profile court cases, utilizing her criminal forensic expertise and psychological evaluation skills to help bring justice and understanding to these legal proceedings.

Additionally, she has worked intimately with numerous female murderers and inmates who suffer from acute mental illnesses at Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, under the supervision of Dr. Michael Maloney, a forensic psychologist in the Menendez Brothers case. Dr. Toles is in high demand as a lecturer and speaker, sharing her knowledge on profiling and understanding the minds of serial offenders. Currently, Dr. Toles is working on a thought-provoking book that challenges our perception of "evil" and encourages us to reconsider our understanding of this concept.

You will also get the chance to ask anything you have ever wanted to know about serial killers in a live Q&A session with Dr. Toles.

Through performing, writing and podcast hosting, co-host Lizzie Bourne scrutinizes what it means to connect with other humans. She has taken to the stage nationally and internationally as an actor and aerial performer; her scripts have been shared with audiences on three continents; and her podcasts Eggshells (on how to disagree well) and #happydaysproject (asking what makes us happy) were listened to across the globe. A dedicated traveler, over the last four years Lizzie has lived in Chicago, Bristol (UK) and Barcelona - but not in the South East of the US, yet! She hails from London, and so is probably not related to Lizzie Borden. Probably.

The Psychology of Serial Killers is a one-person stage show in which the HOST explores what makes serial killers tick, as well as what makes people so fascinated by them. The HOST will speak extemporaneously, working their way through an outline, punctuating their ideas and stories with video cues, projected on an upstage screen. The audience will submit questions on index cards in the lobby, and these will be incorporated into the show's second half. The show has two acts, running for approximately two hours total, including an intermission.
